Abstract

In the modern era of power electronics, transformerless DC-DC boost converters have gained prominence owing to their simplicity, reduced size, and enhanced efficiency in renewable energy applications. In DC-DC boost converters, the optimal design of an inductor, also known as the ‘Heart’ of the converter, is essential for facilitating energy transfer and optimizing conversion efficiency. In this paper, the behavior and reliability of an inductor have been analyzed and reported through its design & comprehensive performance investigation within a 12 V to 24 V transformerless DC-DC boost converter.  The ‘Area Product Method (APM)’ has been utilized to design the inductor through analyzing the factors likewise magnetic length, area of its window, significant turns count, cross-section area, and size of wire. Observations have been made by examining the inductor's performance in relation to output current and load resistance at frequencies of 100 kHz and 500 kHz. In addition, a power loss assessment has also been conducted to analyze the behavior and assess its impact on reliability by comparing it to other power components. This analysis highlights the inductor’s performance at different operating conditions. Further, this paper extends its focus toward evaluating the reliability and instances of failure aspects of the inductor by comparing it with other power components in the DC-DC boost converter. The findings clearly demonstrate the inductor's superior reliability, exhibiting a notably lower failure rate in comparison to other power components. It confirms the durability and sustained performance of inductor. MATLAB® Simulink platform has been used for analyzing the results.
