Abstract

In this study, the authors propose a closed-loop single slope solar still (CLSSS) plant. The primary aim is to develop an affordable, small-sized solar distillation plant that provides a reasonable amount of potable water for small communities, fulfilling their drinking water needs. The mathematical model of the proposed system has been developed and validated through experimentation. The performance of the plant was computed for Jodhpur, India (26°14'20.21"N and 73°1'27.51"E). This proposed plant outperforms conventional single slope solar still (SSSS) plants. For a 16m² (4x4) plant, the daily distillate output in May and January is 122.3 L and 55.7 L, respectively. The output distilled water is 54.4% higher in May and 72.2% higher in January compared to the conventional SSSS plant. The proposed plant produces a total annual output of 25,528 L, approximately 60.9% more than the conventional SSSS plant. Additionally, the study finds that the mass flow rate (MFR) of water has very little effect on the distillate produced. The cost of water produced ranges from Rs 0.30/L (0.0036 US$) to Rs 0.70/L (0.0085 US$), with a payback period between 70 to 151 days.
